What is Exercise Physiology?
Exercise Physiology is a specialised field focused on the body’s response to physical activity. Accredited Exercise Physiologists (AEPs) create customised exercise programs designed to improve overall health, fitness, and performance. These programs help manage and prevent chronic conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, arthritis, and obesity. AEPs provide expert guidance to individuals of all ages and fitness levels, empowering them to achieve their health and wellness goals.
Key Benefits of Working with an Accredited Exercise Physiologist (AEP):
Management of Chronic Conditions: Use exercise and lifestyle modification to manage diabetes, heart disease, arthritis, and obesity.
Musculoskeletal/Surgical Rehabilitation: Post-rehabilitation programs to optimise recovery after surgery or musculoskeletal injuries (3 months+).
Hands-Off Therapy: Treatment through movement and exercise instead of hands-on manual therapy.
Personalised Exercise Plans: Tailored programs based on individual diagnoses and specific health needs.
Collaboration with Healthcare Professionals: AEPs work closely with specialists, GPs, and allied health professionals to ensure comprehensive care.
Prevention of Re-injury: Enhance musculoskeletal function to reduce the risk of re-injury during recovery.
Why Choose an AEP?
Individualised Approach: AEPs design exercise programs that are specific to your health status and goals.
Evidence-Based Interventions: Programs are based on scientific research and clinical evidence to ensure effectiveness.
Holistic Support: AEPs provide not only exercise prescription but also education, advice, and support for lasting lifestyle changes.
FAQs
01. How can Exercise Physiology improve my mental health?
Exercise Physiologists can help improve mental health by designing exercise programs that reduce stress, anxiety, and depression. Regular physical activity is known to boost mood, improve sleep, and increase overall well-being. Exercise Physiologists can tailor exercise plans to suit individual mental health needs, promoting both physical and psychological health.
02. What’s the difference between an Exercise Physiologist and a Personal Trainer?
While both focus on exercise and physical health, Exercise Physiologists are university-trained professionals with expertise in treating chronic health conditions and creating tailored programs for medical conditions or rehabilitation. Personal Trainers primarily focus on fitness goals such as weight loss, strength, and endurance without the clinical training to manage complex health conditions.
03. What can I expect during my first session with an Exercise Physiologist?
During your first session, the Exercise Physiologist will conduct a comprehensive assessment of your health, fitness level, and any existing medical conditions or injuries. They will discuss your goals and concerns and then develop a personalised exercise plan that aligns with your needs. The session may include a combination of education, assessment, and gentle exercises to get you started safely.
